How Safe is Your Water Bottle?
Whether you buy bottled water or conscientiously tote some from home, you'll want to avoid swallowing chemicals along with it. Particularly for small children, whose bodies are developing, it's best to steer clear of plastics that can release chemicals that could harm them in the long term. Check the recycling number on the bottom:
Plastics to Avoid - #3, #6, #7
#3 Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) - AVOID - commonly contains di-2-ethylhexyl phthalate (DEHP), an endocrine disruptor and probable human carcinogen, as a softener (some bottles & food wrap).
#6 Polystyrene (PS) - AVOID - may leach styrene, a possible endocrine disruptor and human carcinogen, into water and food. (Styrofoam cups & food containers)
#7 Polycarbonate Lexan - AVOID - contains the hormone disruptor bisphenol-A (BPA), which mimics estrogen and has been linked to fertility and reproductive problems. BPA can leach out as bottles age, are heated or exposed to acidic solutions. Unfortunately, #7 is used in many sports bottles, baby bottles, sippy cups and five-gallon water jugs and in the lining of many food cans.
Are plastic bottles safe?
If you must drink from a plastic bottle, #2, #4, or #5 are safest (the number are on the bottom). Also water bottles #1 are generally recognized as safe for single use.
For the rest of the time, the BEST alternatives are Sigg coated aluminum bottles (independently tested to be free of non-leaching chemicals), Klean Kanteen stainless steel bottles or glass bottles.
